Establishment of Paralympic Movement of Azerbaijan coincides with the period of social and political stability created by the return of our national leader Mr. Heydar Aliyev to the leadership of the country.
One of the winter days in February of 1996 is embedded in the sport history of our country as a date of establishment of the National Paralympic Committee of Azerbaijan Republic .
Along with the number of different public organizations of disabled citizens, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism played a very important role in the establishment of the National Paralympic Committee.
Support of organizations such as Marhamat Sport Association of Disabled and Sport Federation of Deaf needs to be specially underlined.
Above mentioned organizations were not inclusive of all groups and types of disabled. In order to integrate other disabled athletes and sportsmen and to join the international paralympic movement it was deemed necessary to establish the National Paralympic Committee of Azerbaijan Republic.
Since 1996 the National Paralympic Committee of Azerbaijan Republic participated in the Paralympic games and our athletes won two gold, two silver and one bronze medals. Our athletes and teams have also attended different tournaments, World and European championships and have been among the winners of the highest positions.
After attending each Summer Paralympic games National Paralympic Committee has established a tradition of developing a new paralympic type of sport in Azerbaijan .
At this moment of time National Paralympic Committee is successfully developing five types of paralympic sports. These types are: Judo, Power lifting, Athletics, Shooting and Archery.
National Committee is also working on development of team sports such as goal ball and five side football (for blind and those with limited or defected eye sight).
