NATIONAL PARALIMPIC COMMITTEE OF AZERBAIJAN REPUBLIC
State and the Paralympic movement
From the date of its establishment the National Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan has been enjoying support of the State. For this very reason date of establishment of Azerbaijan Paralympic Movement coincides with the period of social and political stability, achieved after the return of our national leader Mr Heydar Aliyev back to the leadership of the country. One of the winter days in February of 1996 is embedded in the sport history of our country as a date of establishment of the National Paralympic Committee of Azerbaijan Republic .
National Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan has always enjoyed the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism and by the support of these institutions National Committee has achieved highest results in number of different European and Worldwide tournaments.
Our national leader Mr Heydar Aliyev has met with the national paralympic athletes before tenth Summer Paralympic Games and extended his support and wished the best of luck.
In 2000 before eleventh Summer Paralympic Games national leader Mr Heydar Aliyev has visited training base of the national paralympic athletes and attended departure ceremony, President of the National Olympic Committee Mr Ilham Aliyev has also met with the national paralympic team and all these support and care has significantly inspired our athletes and strengthened their motivation before the reputable tournament.
During that period national leader Mr Heydar Aliyev has signed a decree to initiate the construction of a new training complex for paralympic athletes.
Eleventh Summer Paralympic Games of 2000 has been successful for the athletes of Azerbaijan and upon return back to the country Mr Heydar Aliyev has personally met with the athletes and granted different awards to the athletes and their coaches. This attention and care has been an additional stimulus to the development and strengthening of Azerbaijan Paralympic Movement.
In 2004, on the eve of twelfth Summer Paralympic Games, President of Azerbaijan Republic Mr Ilham Aliyev did not resign from his position of a President at the National Olympic Committee and this decision has proven to be in favor of development of sports in Azerbaijan, by his decrees new Olympic sport complexes, sport training bases and stadiums have been constructed. Successful participation of our national paralympic team at the twelfth Summer Paralympic Games was the results of above mentioned support.
Azerbaijanian paralympic athletes those have successfully participated at Paralympic Games in Athens have been largely fostered by our much loved President and construction of a Paralympic Complex that was initiated by our national leader Mr Heydar Aliyev has accelerated under the leadership of the President Mr Ilham Aliyev. All these support is an indicator of care by the state to the development of sport, support to the athletes and care for the disabled athletes.
Awards and gifts given to the athletes and their coaches who have successfully participated at the twelfths Summer Paralympic Games is an illustration of the state support to the disabled athletes.
National Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan by the support of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism and along with number of other sport Federations and Associations is successfully carrying out its work of developing paralympic sports in Azerbaijan, our major aim for 2008 is to successfully represent our Republic at the thirteenth Summer Paralympic Games.
